The aesthetic map of contemporary jazz is constantly expanding its horizons. Over the past two decades, Nu Jazz has gradually been emerging from its own somewhat marginal artistic world to become a popular trend among new, and not so new, fans. Musicians from this cold and evanescent current of jazz are increasingly to be found on our festival billboards. Although this music gravitates towards a Zen-like calm, it nevertheless defends its position with tenacity. And if any one name has the right to be ranked at the top of this genre, it’s that of Norwegian guitarist Eivind Aarset.

Eivind has played in Spain on several occasions, you may have seen him accompanying Dhafer Yousef or perhaps Bugge Wesseltoft too, and, of course, Nils Petter Molvaer, with whom he played in this festival in 2016 and 2018. This time he’s visiting us with his band to offer a summary of his artistic journey. A journey that spans from the spontaneous sound of Jan Bang to the soaring atmospheric darkness of Bill Laswell, not to mention world music, avant-garde jazz or rock, which explains his recordings with the Israeli Rim Banna, Sámi singer Mari Boine, or Jon Hassell.

A precocious adventurer, he took up the guitar at the very early age of twelve, after listening to Jimi Hendrix. He later discovered post-Miles Davis electroclash and flirted with rock in a number of fledgling bands. It was, however, his contribution to keyboard player Bugge Wesseltoft’s ensemble that allowed him to crystallise the sound he was looking for. Aarset uses it by way of an atmospheric painting to project images that several critics have compared to a Nordic landscape, full of fjords and whaling songs. Paradoxically, however, his music also evokes immense deserts and the desolate landscapes portrayed in science fiction films. All this awaits you on the stage.
