Who would have thought that Django Reinhardt’s influence would be so vast and so far-reaching? Of all his outstanding pupils, Biréli Lagrène is perhaps the most brilliant. Born in 1966 and with more than forty albums to his name since his debut in 1980, this musician of gypsy descent knows all there is to know about jazz manouche. But that doesn’t mean that Lagrène is a purist, far from it. A fervent admirer of Wes Montgomery and George Benson, this French guitarist and bassist also found time in his career to dabble in jazz-rock fusion with Jaco Pastorius, before forming his Gypsy Project. Is he a legend? I guess you could say so.
