He’s the rhythm. The cadence. The bold metronome that breaks all the rules. Mark Guiliana, one of the most renowned drummers to emerge on the international jazz scene, is all that and much more. Someone once said: “What happens when you add hard bop drum masters Elvin Jones and Art Blakey to a 1980s Roland 808 drum machine, divide the result by J Dilla and then multiply to the power of Squarepusher? Answer: Mark Guiliana”. Not a bad way to describe someone who has played for David Bowie, Brad Mehldau, Avishai Cohen, Mr. Vincent, Peal Jam and Matisyahu, and who has fostered a genuine interest in jazz, electronic music and whatever adventurous rhythmic sophistication has been thrown his way. Born in New Jersey in 1980, this composer, educator, producer and founder of the independent record label Beat Music Productions, visits us as a quartet, along with bassist Alan Hampton, pianist David Cook and tenor saxophonist Jason Rigby.
