It may be possible to sound cooler than Theo Croker, but it’s no easy task. Born in Florida in 1985, this trumpet player, composer and vocalist has been pulling off some amazing feats for years, using soul, R&B, jazz, hip-hop and electronic music as his excuse. Of course, he has something of a pedigree: his grandfather was the historic trumpeter Doc Cheatham, an outstanding student of Louis Armstrong who toured with Benny Goodman in the 1950s. His albums are of the utmost elegance and contemporaneity, spiced with collaborations with Jill Scott, Ari Lennox, J. Cole, Jamila Woods and Wyclef Jean, as was the case with the acclaimed Love Quantum (2022), quite possibly his masterpiece. At least to date, because if there is one thing that is hard to predict, it is just how far this syncretic, visionary and ambitious musician can go.
